Thanks, Benny, for
always getting us to
school safely
and on time.

  Ted Davis and Billy Elasic
Benny took us to and from
the Higbie Lane School and
then to the new high school
until THE BRIDGE was built.
After that, we had to walk
come rain or shine, fair or
foul weather, hot or cold, it
mattered not. We trudged
back and forth, day after day
(uphill both ways), carrying
ALL of those   heavy books.

These photos were taken in 1958. It's funny,
but I don't have any pics from the rest of the
time spent at WI.   And what is even more
curious, is that I took none of my girlfriends. I
wonder what Freud would have had to say about
that!!!

Tom

Barraga

Tom was just one of many boys who played baseball in the field at the end of
Tanglewood Road. Although he didn't attend WIHS, he lived in my neighborhood
so he was one of us. Once in a while, the tomboy in me made me play ball, too, but
that was when the other girls weren't around. When my girlfriends were there,
we usually just sat around and cheered them on trying to get noticed. The field
was a pretty good place to hang out. There were plenty of apple trees to climb,
and we would sit in them and talk about.... what else???    BOYS!!!!

Argyle

Park

On warm summer days, a  bunch of us would  take off  right after breakfast with lunches safely
stowed in our bicycle baskets.  We would go on an exploration to find something new.  Sometimes we
headed for Brentwood and poked around in the woods. Other times we would head for the water's
edge where blueberries could be found in abundance (as well as bees).  It was fun to ride through
the streets south of Montauk Highway to look at the boats.
If we were at Argyle Park when lunch time rolled around, the ducks and swans would wind up
with  the  crusts  from  our  sandwiches.   On one excursion there we found a large turtle.   Someone
had stabbed it numerous times through its shell.  Needless to say, the poor thing didn't survive such
a heartless attack.
Of all the places we stopped for lunch, I think my favorite was a little wooded area on the north
side of Montauk Highway pretty  close to Higbie Lane.  Beautiful violets grew  in  the  shade and we
would sit among them, listening to the birds as we ate.
